ISOC.PT ANRW 2020 Awards: Nominations, Prizes and Mentions

The following papers were initially nominated by the program committee as candidates for the ANRW.PT 2020 Prize. ISOC.PT is pleased to highlight the quality and merit of the nominated papers and to announce the final ANRW.PT Prizes and Mentions, for supporting presentations in the public award ceremony (TBA) and workshop, and for the best papers to support the authors for the submission and presentation (if accepted) in ACM/IRTF ANRW’2020 in Madrid (event sponsored by COMCAST, AKAMAI, ACM Sigcomm and IRTF). ANRW.PT 2020 Prize: Best Research Paper and Internet Impact Acknowledge Mention

On the unobservability of multimedia-based covert channels for Internet censorship circumvention, Authors: Diogo Barradas, Nuno Santos, and Luis Rodrigues (INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa)

    The contribution is an excellent overview of relevant recent research work conducted by the authors on the unobservability of multimedia-based network covert channels. The work covers the past research attempts at creating a traffic analysis-resistant covert channel and the research efforts in evaluating the effectiveness of state-of-the-art machine learning techniques in the detection of contemporary tools which generate covert channels. It is an excellent piece of research work proposing novel techniques to scale such detection capabilities and techniques for the creation of unobervable traffic-morphed and multimedia-based covert channels. The work impact on effective detection of covert channels may put the life of journalists and internet users at risk when they rely on these tools to exercise freedom of speech, particularly within countries ruled by oppressive regimes.

ANRW.PT 2020 Prize: Best Technical Paper and IETF Relevance Mention

EAP-SH: An EAP authentication protocol to Integrate captive portals with 802.11i, Authors: Nuno Marques (Universidade de Aveiro), André Zúquete (DETI/IEETA, Universidade de Aveiro), and João Paulo Barroca (DETI/IT, Universidade de Aveiro)

    This work describes an interesting proposal for a solution that can integrate the Captive Portal paradigm, which facilitates enrolment of new network subscribers, with the standard practices of security for 802.11 networks. The contribution relies on a new EAP-compliant protocol (Extended
    Authentication Protocol for Secure Hotspots, EAP-SH) that bridges both approaches, providing a solution for a flexible and effective
    authentication framework.

ANRW.PT 2020 Relevant Research Mention

Intrusion Detection with Programmable Switches, Authors: João Amado (INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa), Salvatore Signorello (LASIGE, Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa), Miguel Correia (INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa) and Fernando M. V. Ramos (INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa)

    This work is an interesting research contribution in the field of novel solutions to run efficient sketch-based intrusion detection techniques with provable trade-offs between memory and accuracy, directly in the data plane of software defined network data planes, at line rate. To address the problem, the authors have been worked on a pro-active push-based, feature-rich network monitoring technique to assist learning-based attack detection. The approach is particularly interesting in using unsupervised learning to detect ongoing attacks and consequently in the fast detection of zero-day attacks, without requiring operator knowledge of
    attack signatures.

Resource Synchronization Mechanisms for the Web of Things, Authors: A. Mazayev and Noélia Correia (Universidade do Algarve)

    This contribution is a survey on the current standards and architectures using Representational State Transfer (REST) Application
    Programming Interfaces (APIs) and event processing solutions as
    important elements for device-interoperability and autonomous responsiveness to address dynamic Internet of Things systems and applications involving edged-based constrained devices. The work also addresses limitations and trends to design such solutions that can have an important role to address more trustable and interoperable IoT environments.
